Fill 'er Up

I haven't had a whole lot of inspiration lately, so since it's been some time since I posted regularly I'll just clear out the archives. This abandoned gas station is located just off Route 10 in Whippany, NJ (maybe Parsippany, I'm not sure). This was just before sunset last October. Despite the good sun angle, the color shots didn't turn out quite like I hoped they would so I went the grainy B&W route.

Is it too late to post Christmas images? Well too bad. This isn't Christmasey per se, but in the interest of full disclosure I will say it was taken that day. If you want to pretend it's President's Day candle or something, that's cool.

Flemington Sunset

Well, still no luck on the winter front. I think I've seen about 18 flakes so far. So here's another shot from the fall. I don't know what struck me about this particular sink, other than it was on the back porch of a business. So that's not usual I guess.

I've had a bit of a dry spell since late summer. Not really feeling any inspiration. So I forced myself to get out there and shoot. I'm glad I did, as I got some decent stuff. This is from one of my old standbys - the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park. This is near the Millstone Bridge in Kingston.

Civil War experiment

Last weekend we visited a Civil War re-enactment near Lambertville, NJ. The turnout wasn't that great and it was pretty damn hot, but I did get some decent shots. I took the opportunity to try out a new technique for making one of the photos look "genuine." For comparison, I've included the shot in splendid color.

As easy as hosting my photoblog on Blogger is, the technical limitations involved have become readily apparent. At present, I am trying to find a way to divide my uploaded photos into categories on Blogger. That way, for example, if you (or I) want to browse all my flower photos, they are all just one click away. The current Blogger system of archiving posts based on what month they were published is rather useless, unless you really want to read backward through my entire posting history to find something specific. Not that I would discourage that, of course.

So, if anyone out there has any suggestions, lay 'em on me!

The Lateness of the Hour

Sundial located in the garden area of the arboretum. I tried this in color and B&W, and decided that the color version was more appealing due to the warmness of the sunlight. Unfortunately that same sunlight caused a loss of detail on the right side of the sundial, but I recovered as much as I could in Photoshop.

Oh, and I appropriated the title from an old Twilight Zone episode.

This past winter was pretty mild in New Jersey, but I'm still glad to see the first signs of spring. Around here, one of the first signs of the season is the abundance of daffodils. This lovely specimen was shot at the Hunterdon County Arboretum in Clinton Township.

Tonight was Open House night for the Plainfield Curling Club, so the missus and I stopped by for our first on-ice experience. I'm here to tell you, it's harder than it looks. Although I am happy to report that my butt is bruise-free.

One of the nice things about travelling to Cape May in March is that you don't have to avoid any crowds on the beach. Or any place for that matter.

The idea behind this shot is simple - I set the camera on the sand and shot.

Our condo development has a bit of a problem with the geese population. Could have fooled me. As you can imagine, driving down the street these critters cross is quite an adventure. And we've been told that there used to be a lot more of them just a few years ago.

Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park

One of the nice things about central New Jersey is the copious amount of parks and other nature-type areas that are quite suitable for photography. The Delaware & Raritan Canal State Park is close to my office, so it's a good lunch-time destination.

This particular batch was taken in late November. More importantly, they represent my first (crude) attempt to spruce up my photos with Photoshop.

I found this tree stump in one of the calmer areas of the canal system; hence the floating debris clinging nearby.

I'm proud to be the first person ever to photograph a trail winding off into the distance.

I had to switch to the digital zoom to get even this close to the swan.

Apparently this caterpillar was in its death throes. Shortly after taking this picture, it simply rolled onto its side and stopped moving. I never touched it, I swear!

I'm a sucker for converging verticals. I just wish the sky had been a bit more colorful (or that my Photoshop skills could make it look like the sky had been a bit more colorful).

Chicago (My Kind of Town)

These were taken on a recent business trip to Chicago. Next to Montreal, I would have to rate Chicago as my favorite big city.

I have no idea what building this is, but the Christmas (um, I mean holiday) colors were nice enough to warrant a shot.

Across the street from Marshall Field's. I really dug the trumpet motif. The blur lines on the traffic were unintentional, but I like the effect.
